Former Minnesota Senator Mark Dayton (DFL) today selected current State Senator Yvonne Prettner Solon as his running mate in the Governor's race. Prettner Solon is in her third term in the State Senate. She replaced her husband, Senator Sam Solon who died of cancer in 2001. Prettner Solon represents the the Duluth area.

The pick gives the ticket both a metro and greater Minnesota appeal. It also provides a gender balance, something Dayton said was important to him in his selection. Dayton said the Prettner Solon was his first and only choice for a running mate. Prettner Solon however had thrown her support to DFLer's R.T. Rybak and Tom Baak this year. Prettner Solon said that in the case of Baak, she was hoping to give a rural perspective. She says after Baak dropped out of the race, she was contacted by Mayor RT Rybak and that Dayton had asked her for her support too late.
